The Mogadishu Mile Kentucky was born from a simple, powerful idea: that the 19 men of Task Force Ranger who gave their lives in the streets of Mogadishu on October 3–4, 1993 should never be forgotten — and that the best way to honor warriors is to push yourself to your limits in their name.
In 2021, John Chmela and a small team of dedicated volunteers brought that idea to life at Queenslake Horse Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky. What began as a 4-man outdoor team fitness competition — modeled on the grueling conditions of the Battle of Mogadishu — drew participants from across the region who came to run, ruck, and honor the fallen.
Kentucky Wounded Heroes presented the inaugural event, channeling 100% of proceeds to charity. The course challenged teams through physical stations designed to reflect the endurance and sacrifice of Task Force Ranger. Rain or shine, the competitors showed up — and the tradition was born.
The first year proved that this community was hungry for something real: not a fun run, but a tribute. Not a race, but a reckoning. The Mogadishu Mile Kentucky had arrived.
